Class Description

It can be confusing to try to figure out exactly which type of yoga class you'd like to attend.  All physical forms of yoga are called hatha yoga. From this basic form of yoga a number of styles of yoga with unique differentiating factors have evolved.

Here at Jolly Frog Yoga, we teach two distnct styles of yoga: Ashtanga which is an energetic, strong form of yoga, taught according to a traditional, set sequence and Hatha yoga, which is a freestyle form of yoga, incorporating various poses into a flowing sequence.  You'll find each hatha yoga class different to the one before and you'll find that each teacher teachers in a slightly different way with emphasis on different aspects of yoga.

Both styles follow a similar sequence of warm up and/or sun salutations, standing poses, balancing poses, a floor sequence and a relaxation at the end of class.  Breath work is an important focus in all of our classes.

Hatha/Hatha Fusion yoga

Steady poses and breath work are combined with focused strengthening and stretching movements.   This class follows classical hatha sequencing.  Poses are held for between 5 and 10 breaths.  The yoga that we teach in these classs is a blend of various yoga styles.  These classes are not a fixed routine but a freestyle form of yoga.  Each teacher draws on their various yoga backgrounds to bring you a unique, restorative and uplifting class.

Every class is different (although a number of core postures are always present), providing you with a broad range of strenthening and stretching techniques.

These classes are suitable for all level of yogis.  Typically poses will be taught in their basic forms with options offerred as needed for the more advanced practitioner.

Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga yoga is a dynamic form of yoga blending steady postures, flowing sequences and breath work.  Ashtanga yoga provides you with a strong class which challenges strength, flexibility and fitness.  At Jolly Frog Yoga, we teach three different Asthanga classes:

Primary Series

This class is a led primary series.  The entire primary series is taught in the traditional way as taught in Mysore India.  The primary series is a set sequence of poses so it is the same every week.  We warm up with sun salutations, work through a standing sequence which incorporates balancing poses and then come to the floor for seated and closing sequences, intermingled with vinyasa which improves strength and fitness.

Ashtanga Blend

This class draws upon Ashtanga poses and principles. Each class commences with the ashtanga sun salutations and most of the opening sequnce.  The class then works with poses from various Ashtanga yoga series.  The class moves a little slower than the primary series class, giving time for technique refinement and correction.

This class is a great introduction to Ashtanga style yoga or an opportunity to refine your technique.

Ashtanga Mysore Style

Mysore style classes are a self practice class where you work through the set sequnce of Ashtanga poses in your own time.  (Pose sheets are available if required!!)

A teacher is present to provide adjustments, answer questions and guide you through practice where you require it.

The advantage of this class is that you work at your own pace.  You receive guidance and assistance where you need it.  You can also spend time on certain poses with a teacher's help or ask questions as you like without affecting a class of people or slowing anyone else down.

This class also helps you to take control of your yoga and starts you on a path to self practice or if you are already practicing at home gives you a chance to refine certain postures or work on postures that may be bothering you with the help of a teacher.

Pose sheets are provided at class if you need them, after a few months (or perhaps sooner) you won't need the practice sheets anymore.
